First ESPN BET’s Retail Sportsbook Opens in The Hollywood Casino at Greektown

Latest News

The time has finally arrived for the new ESPN BET sportsbook and restaurant on the upper floor of the 100,000-square-foot downtown Detroit’s Hollywood Greektown Casino to open its doors. This space is in partnership with PENN Entertainment and ESPN. The newly rebranded ESPN BET app and website launched in November 2023 but this is the first retail property of its kind across PENN Entertainment’s portfolio.

“Bringing ESPN BET to Hollywood Greektown combines PENN’s premier sports media and sports betting offerings to create an amazing atmosphere for fans to watch and bet on sports. To celebrate the opening, we’re thrilled to host ESPN talent and programming at our property throughout the week,” said John Drake, General Manager of Hollywood Casino at Greektown.

Before reaching an agreement with the sports network, PENN’s retail sportsbook was in partnership with Barstool Sports.

Opening Event Corresponds to Premier NFL Event

The timing is ideal, with a premier NFL event and a newly branded retail sportsbook, Hollywood Casino at Greektown was the place to be on opening weekend.

Kansas City played host to the draft last year and they saw over 312,000 visitors to the city while the three-day event was going on. This attraction brought about an economic impact of $164.3 million for Kansas City.

The theory is that Detroit would see a similar number of visitors but with an even greater economic impact due to the new retail sportsbook.

“This is an exciting week to debut PENN’s first physical ESPN BET sportsbook as the city of Detroit hosts the NFL Draft and its festivities,” said Hollywood Casino at Greektown General Manager, John Drake.

Mike Morrison, Vice President, of ESPN BET and ESPN Fantasy, said, “We’re thrilled to open the first ESPN BET retail location in Detroit and become part of a community of deeply passionate sports fans. We want fans to come embrace a first-class betting experience and we’re excited to showcase the ESPN BET brand in a contemporary space.”

What Visitors Can Expect From New Retail Sportsbook

Visitors can check out ESPN BET from 11 am-11 pm Monday-Thursday, 11 am-12 am on Fridays, 10 am-12 am on Saturdays, and 10 am-11 pm on Sundays.

Inside the ESPN BET sportsbook and restaurant, guests have 4,500 square feet of dining and betting space located above the casino. The space includes big-screen TVs, and high-tech wagering kiosks, with multiple viewing screens. There is also a 30-wide video wall for the ultimate viewing experience.

Guests can watch various sporting events from either the high and low-top tables, the high-back comfortable booths, or take a seat at the bar. The restaurant is just one of the many high-end options for food throughout the Hollywood Casino at Greektown. The lower level has more ESPN BET areas for guests to watch sporting events at the casino’s Rock Bar.

“Watch your favorite teams on our big screens, place your bets, and grab a burger or some wings and an ice-cold pint. Everything you want in an unbeatable game day experience is right here at the ESPN BET Sportsbook.” from the Hollywood Casino in Greektown advertisement.

Could We be Seeing More of This in the Future?

While PENN or ESPN hasn’t commented on whether or not another retail sportsbook partnership between the two companies is in the future, there is reason to suspect there could be more in the works.

PENN Entertainment runs 43 gaming veneers across 20 states that permit mobile or retail sports wagering, in some cases both. It’s likely that PENN would attempt to maximize its partnership with ESPN, utilizing the portfolio it has built.
