State of Michigan Online Casinos Generates New Monthly Record

Latest News

Online casino fans in the state of Michigan have generated a new monthly record in January resulting in the state’s online casinos generating $181.9 million in revenue. Not only that, but Michigan now leads as the number one state in the nation for online gambling after experiencing massive growth during 2023. According to figures released by the American Gaming Association (AGA), the commercial gaming industry in Michigan set a new revenue record for the third consecutive year in 2023. The AGA also released data compiling the top retail casino locations across the nation. The report said that Detroit remains one of the top casino markets in the country. This comes in a year when workers’ strikes were underway for over six weeks in the fall. It wasn’t enough to keep Detroit out of the top casino markets in the country. Detroit’s three retail casinos generated $1.24 billion in revenue in 2023, ranking them eighth overall.

The previous monthly record was broken in December when the 15 online casino skins generated 181.4 million in revenue. The monthly gain isn’t a whole lot, at just 0.3%, but it still marks a new record for the state!

Perhaps the more impressive jump was between January 2023 and January 2024, when online casino revenue in the state jumped 18.3%. Last January, total revenue for the online casino market in Michigan reached 153.7 million.

The three top players, BetMGM, FanDuel, and DraftKings, continue to dominate the top three spots, accounting for 70% of the total monthly revenue.

According to the AGM, Michigan’s total income from all gambling operations last year reached $3.58 billion. This effectively translates to a 9.9 increase from 2022. These figures do not take into account tribal casino data. All figures reflect just commercial casino and gambling operations regulated by state and federal governments and are not exempt due to tribal immunity. Overall, Michigan sits fifth for total gambling revenues for the year, behind the following states: Nevada with 15.5 billion, New Jersey with 5.8 billion, Pennsylvania with 5.8 billion, and New York with 4.7 billion.

Expected tax revenue from online gaming has also completely shattered what experts thought would be possible in the state. When igaming was first launched estimates of 30 to 40 million were being considered. Yet, in 2023, online operators generated 354 million in tax revenue. The majority of tax revenue from online gambling goes to Michigan’s $18 billion school aid fund, while the city of Detroit gets a large share of the tax revenue. In 2023, the city of Detroit received $89 million in tax payments.

Taking a look back over the years, since Michigan has legalized online gambling reveals that only more people are wagering on the state’s online casinos. In 2021, Michigan residents bet $1.1 billion through online casino apps. That figure jumped from $1.6 billion in 2022 to $1.92 billion in 2023.

Michigan is one of six states in the US with legal online casino gaming. West Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Delaware are the other five states.
