Johannesburg Woman Wins $1 Million

This past month, a lucky Michigan lottery player won a life-changing amount of money on a Cashword Times 20 ticket.

Bonnie Hitchings, a 67-year-old from Johannesburg, Michigan, stopped by the Shell gas station in Gaylord to pick up a few lottery tickets. After realizing that her favorite games were out of stock, she opted to purchase a ticket from another game. Below is Bonnie’s description of the day she purchased the lottery ticket.

“I stopped at the gas station to buy a few Daily 4 tickets,” said Hitchings in a press release from the Michigan Lottery. “When I was checking out, I asked for the Win $100, $200, or $500 ticket, but they were sold out, so I got a Cashword Times 20 ticket instead. I scratched the barcode and scanned the ticket three times. I kept getting a message to file a claim at the lottery office, so I assumed their scanner was broken and went out to my car to scan it on the Lottery app.”

According to the www.michignalottery.com website, any prizes worth $100,000 or more are awarded to players by visiting lottery headquarters at 101 E Hillsdale in downtown Lansing.

“When I scanned the ticket, confetti came up on the screen with a message saying I won $1 million. I went back into the store to show the worker and everyone in the store was so excited. Everywhere I go lately, I have people stopping to congratulate me. It’s a crazy and exciting feeling!”

Hitchings opted to receive a one-time lump sum payment instead of annuity payments. Her total cash out? $634,000! Congratulations Bonnie!

Bar Owner Buys Winning Ticket at Her Own Bar

Another Michigan resident had some incredible luck recently when she won a $1 million Powerball prize. According to the Michigan Lottery, Kristi Sadler purchased a ticket at her own bar in Hart, Michigan. Sadler says she was buying the ticket for her and a friend from Oceana County.

“The morning after the drawing, I got a call that my business had sold a $1 million winner and I just had a feeling it was our ticket,” said Sadler. “After I checked the ticket, I had to call the other club member, who was on vacation out of the country, to let him know we had won. We had always joked that we’d use a special code word if we won, so when he answered and told me he had to pay extra for overseas calls, I said the code word and I told him he wasn’t going to have to worry about the bill!”

Kristi Sadler owns Kristi’s Pour House located in Hart, Michigan at 211 E. Main Street. The ticket was purchased on September 10th for the drawing of the 11th.

Sadler’s win was the eighth winning in Michigan from the $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot run between August and October. The $1.765 billion Powerball jackpot eventually became the second largest jackpot of all time. The prize was eventually won on October 11th, 2023 by a player in California.

The two winners said they would be investing their money in their retirements.
