The Michigan Gaming Control Board released sports betting and online casino revenue numbers for the month of September this week. With the start of the 2022 NFL season, sports betting operators saw a 66.7% increase from August’s numbers. Online casino operators took a step back in September, ending the month with 1.7% less revenue than in August.
While sports betting grew last month, sportsbooks were down year-over-year. Last September, sports betting operators handled a total of $386,780,231 and ended the month with total revenue of $27,135,351. September 2022 resulted in operators reporting a total handle of $383.1 million, just under a 1% decrease from September 2021. Interestingly enough, sports betting operators reported $50.4 million in revenue, an 84.3% increase compared to September 2021.
While online sports wagering grew year over year (2.8%), the overall results are rather unimpressive and are certainly not what playonlinemichigan.com suspected. Some of the dip can be attributed to retail casinos taking a big hit last month. During September, Detroit’s three retail casinos accounted for just $18.6 million of the total handle, a 42.9% drop from September 2021’s numbers of $32.5 million. The loss in retail sports betting revenue caused the three casinos to end Q3 with 7% less revenue than Q3 of 2021.
